Families & Children

"We visited Powderham Castle today  with our 7 month & 5 year old and we had a fantastic family day! Our 5 year old was desperate to go inside the castle for the guided tour and to be honest we were a little concerned that he would get fed up as the tour was an hour long but how wrong could we be! Our tour guide was absolutely fantastic with both our sons and made the tour very interactive and informative! The walled garden and pets corner was fantastic with play fort, zip wire and animals roaming! Our 5 year old particularly loved the potting shed where we planted a seed to bring home! We only live locally but will definitely be back! Thanks for a lovely day but special thanks to our lovely tour guide for making it a day to remember"

The Walled Garden Play Area & Pets Corner

The Walled Garden Play Area & Pets Corner was originally the Victorian walled garden and is now home to the many friendly Powderham pets and our adventure play area. A donkey, pot-bellied pigs, goats, guinea pigs, chickens, sheep, and stick-insects, to name but a few, live here in a blissfully happy environment and enjoy the company of visitors, children and adults alike. The Walled Garden is also home to Timmy 2, and his companion, Eliza - both Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoises, who have spent most of their lives in Devon and have become quite the local celebrities, appearing on 'Blue Peter' in recent years.

The Garden is on a south-facing slope and has a glasshouse built by the architect Charles Fowler, which now provides a wet weather shelter for visitors and is used by the Estate to supply plants to the Plant Centre at Powderham Country Store, the delightful small shopping complex just within the Castle gates.

The Walled Garden is also home to the Courtenay Fort and a family picnic area.

The Walled Garden Play Area & Pets Corner are open from 11.00am; closing times will vary during the season, please check on arrival. The Walled Garden is accessible to visitors with wheelchairs and pushchairs, although there are some steep slopes.

deer park safari

This is a wonderful opportunity to take a tractor trailer ride into the deer park to admire the Castle's surrounding natural rugged beauty from the banks of the Exe estuary. The deer park is home to around 600 fallow deer as well as other wildlife. You will learn about their habitat and the history of the Castle through a running commentary and see an exceptional view of the Castle from what was originally the front entrance.

The trip takes about 35 minutes, running at a leisurely pace to allow visitors to take some unique photos and relax in what has to be one of the most stunning settings in Devon. A real treat!

The pick up point is opposite the Welcome Hut, by the lake and the trailer can hold a maximum of 45 people seated.

The Deer Park Safari is available Wednesdays and Thursdays all season and daily during the Devon school holidays. Also available for Groups to pre-book all season. It is subject to the weather & ground conditions. A small extra charge applies. Tickets can be purchased from the Welcome Hut.

Adult/Senior/Child: £2.50

Family (2+2): £8.50

The tractor/trailer is accessible to visitors with wheelchairs and pushchairs.

We have two trails for youngsters to follow around the grounds. The Orange Trail runs along the path up to the Walled Garden Play Area & Pets Corner and the Yellow Trail takes you from the Walled Garden up to the Woodland Garden.

The Nature Trail is a great way to explore the grounds and make your own discoveries. Afterwards you can pop in to our Nature Nook (in the brewhouse) to read, draw or simply let us know about something you have seen on the trails. Throughout the season there will be a Nature Craft activity for you to do in here too. Please note this is an unsupervised area so all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Once you have completed two trails you can pop along to the Courtyard Gift Shop and claim your very own fabulous Powderham memento.
